  Perth Ontario has a long and interrupted history in distilling. After prohibition it seems that only large distilleries could survive. Thirty years after Ontarians acquired a test for micro breweries, we are again discovering the rich variety of aromas and flavours that are possible when a small local distillery is opened. Top Shelf is just such a find. Their gin and vodka are already available at the LCBO. The gin retains a healthy juniper berry aroma but grapefruit adds to the mix. We will have to wait another few years for whiskey, but in the meantime can content ourselves with its precursor - moonshine. The Lanark County maple syrup flavoured moonshine is my personal favourite, with the apple pie as a close second. Seriously worth a visit.
